Lucy : Grand Junction Senior Photography

Lucy is the oldest of four children, and both her grandfather and father are local physicians. In a big family with deep roots in the community, it would be easy to sink into the shadows. Instead, Lucy stands on her own. She just began her senior year at Fruita Monument High School and has plans for college after graduation. She is a smart, naturally beautiful, confident young woman with great personal style. It will be fun to see where her future takes her.

Lucy, it was a pleasure to spend the evening with you. I wish you the best in the next year and all those to come! Cheers … Cat

I love these next two, but they are also meant to be a bit of a joke. We had to reschedule Lucy’s session three times because of rain. The night it finally worked out for us was perfect, and we didn’t need this umbrella.

My favorite from her session. I know Lucy prefers photos of herself when she is smiling, but I think she looks gorgeous here.

Lucy had no problem moving from place to place in search of new and different light. The green ivy has spectacular color at sunset.

I am sure someone will ask about Lucy’s top, so I will mention that she found it at Anthropologie—one of my favorite stores and a great place to find interesting, colorful pieces.

I love this one.

Lucy’s shoes are by Tom’s, a fantastic company that gives one pair of new shoes to a child in need for every pair sold. They call it One for One.

The setting sun was reflected here and made Lucy glow. I thought the light on her hair was so interesting.

Happy Tuesday!

My Aha Moment

A few weeks ago, Megan from the production company for Mutual of Omaha’s Aha Moment Campaign, sent me an email. She explained that she had stumbled upon my blogsite, and found the entry I had written about my son Elliot on his birthday.

She asked if I would come in for a short interview. Honestly, I cringed because being filmed in a formal setting makes me sick with nerves. I decided that getting out of my comfort zone and speaking some truth in a public forum was more important than my nerves.

And so, here it is.

My Aha Moment: Photos of Everything

Happy Friday!

Kyle : Grand Junction Senior Photographer

As we thumbed through the earmarked pages of the magazines he had brought with him, Kyle explained what he liked about the photographs—the look, the mood, the camera angle. I knew that this senior portrait session was going to be a creative collaboration, because Kyle is an artist too. He has a great eye for composition and finding artistic relevance in everyday objects. So, we went out one evening last week, and this is what we came up with.

Kyle, I loved working with you on this session. I hope you explore photography in college because I’m excited to see how you grow your talents!  … cheers, cat

Kyle had this cool building and alleyway in mind for the first half of his session. I love the images we created here.

A short technical note here. We were going for a documentary feel to these images, so I mainly used a 35mm lens and backed off of Kyle so we could incorporate the scene around him. (I shoot a full frame sensor camera, equivalent to the 35mm film frame, and the 35mm focal length lens is as wide as I like to go.) This is different than how I usually shoot, but I like the results. I think the images are more storytelling and masculine.

I especially like these next two.

I like the blue tones here.

For the second half of the session, Kyle wanted to do something that incorporated his sport—track—and he wanted to it in a non-traditional way. I think we accomplished that.

Kyle says lane #4 is the fastest.

Dana + Her Sisters

Here are a few sweet ones from a session not long ago with Dana and Brent Prosser, and Dana’s extended family. It was a fun time with lots of energetic kids!

First up, here is little Luke at his six-month mark.

Any day that I get to photograph big brother Evan’s smile is a good day.

The oldest of four.

Twins!

The youngest, Olivia, loved being in front of the camera.

I love these two photos. This is the lucky dad of these four daughters.

And finally, one more of these three beautiful sisters.

Three Sisters

I have lots of delicious eye candy coming up on the blog in the next few weeks, including some delightful families and several senior sessions. I have such a great group of young adults this year. I can’t wait for you to meet Kyle next week. I know his mom is excited too. (Hi Louise!)

Before I hit the road for a quick weekend trip, I want to share this quick sneak peek of a session I will be blogging on Monday. I have photographed Dana (on the right) and her family before, and when her sisters and nieces were in town recently, she asked me to come do some group photos. I mainly photographed the children, but this photo of Dana with her sisters is the one that stands out to me.

Happy Friday!
